Since soil is the main foundation for the production of food to nurture life,
good soil means better food security and nutrition. More than 95% of foods
produced on earth rely on water and nutrients from soil. Thus, the conservation,
improvement and nourishment of soil are the basis of healthiness, wellbeing,
and food security for human beings.
Agricultural areas only cover 38% of the land on earth. As the world population
keeps growing, soil is being more heavily used to produce enough food for us all.
The lack of good soil management and improper agricultural practices have
deteriorated soil and reduced its nutrients and productivity. Lower amounts of
agricultural produce affect the entire human race and lead to political, social, and
environmental instability.
If left unaddressed, soil degradation can only worsen. For this reason, the Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has come up with
a new campaign to raise awareness of the loss of nutrients in soil, a global threat
to food sustainability and security, under the theme “Soils: Where Food
Begins.”
