In Thailand, the World Soil Day 2021 was held between December 2-5, 2021 at
the Land Development Station, Roi Et Province (Thung Kula Ronghai) under the
theme “Halt Soil Salinization, Boost Soil Productivity” The event’s location,
Thung Kula Ronghai, once suffered from all types of soil problems, including
saline soil which made this land futile until the Land Development Department
stepped in to help manage the land and transformed it into the cultivated area
of the world-renowned, top-quality jasmine rice.
This year, the King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award went to the Nigeria
Institute of Soil Science (NISS) from Nigeria. The main highlight of this event
was the exhibition of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great’s royal
initiatives on saline soil management and the continuation, maintenance,
and further development during the reign of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn
Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua. Other activities included saline soil-related
presentations, discussion, training, and performances which attracted over 4,000
interested participants.
Internationally, Thailand joined the annual World Soil Day celebration
at the FAO Headquarter in Rome, Italy via the online channel and hosted
a major event in New York, USA together with delegations from Ecuador, Russia,
Lesotho, FAO, UNCCD and GSP. Over 800 activities from 94 countries worldwide
were also held to mark this special occasion.
