The United Nations has designated December 5 as the “World Soil Day”
to honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, the world’s first and
only humanitarian soil scientist, for his outstanding contribution to sustainable soil
management.
Soil salinity is a serious threat to agriculture worldwide since the accumulation
of sodium at high levels destroys the soil structure, makes soil more prone to
pollution, and negatively affects plants and living creatures underground.
For farmers, saline soil hinders the growth of crops, causing their yields to
become lower in quantity and quality. In some severely affected areas, farmers
cannot grow crops anymore and are forced to abandon their land, resulting in
huge economic, social, and environmental losses.
Salt-affected soil areas in Thailand can be found in the Northeast, the Central,
and coastal areas. Most of them are used for agricultural, aquacultural, and
tree-planting purposes. The Land Development Department continues to conduct
studies to manage and develop salt-affected soil areas nationwide.
